Approach

THE SYSTEM

I combine four core elements for

Comprehensive Exceptional Student Support

to ensure optimal growth and success for each client.

THE SESSION

A typical session lasts 60 minutes (minus time for breaks) and focuses on academic intervention or enrichment while incorporating executive functioning and adaptive skills practice.

Below is an example of how a lesson might be structured and sequenced. The session is structured much like centers or stations in school with comparable and consistent expectations.

The format is flexible and geared toward the specific needs of the student.

The reward system is based on an agreed upon incentive geared toward the student’s interests and is included with the session.

Progress monitoring is an important component of working with a student. Below is an example of progress monitoring for multiplication facts fluency.

The green ‘7’ line represents the goal for multiplication facts fluency, which combines accuracy and speed.

WHAT I DO BETWEEN SESSIONS

Tutoring requires a certain amount of prep work and follow-up. At a minimum, I do the following to reflect on a completed session and prepare for the next one.

  • Update progress monitoring.
  • Use the data to modify lessons if necessary.
  • Create individualized activities based on the student’s interests and support needs, including worksheets, assessments, activities, and strategies.
  • Research best practices to find which ones might be most effective for the student.
  • Keep the lines of communication open with the family if there are any questions and/or concerns on either end.
